Overview Of The Common Society Movement | Print |

The elements of the Common Society Movement were conceived in Sri Lanka, the day of Sarvodaya's monumental Peace Meditation, which involved 600,000 people from all walks of life. What would be a U.S. equivalent to that massive outpouring of Sri Lankans for peace? How could we re-direct America, as the Sri Lankans have re-directed their society, toward peace?

Of course, we cannot ask 3,000,000 people to show up in Washington, DC. We lack the infrastructure to accomplish such a task: Sarvodaya has been working on its infrastructure for almost 45 years. And, more importantly, that's not what we need right now!

What we need now is vision - a vision that we create together, for a world we want to live in. We need a PROCESS we all can have faith in, because we all participate in it. We need consensus.

Questions & Answers

What it is you really expect of the catalyst leaders besides showing the presentation and signing up others to show the presentation?

How can we conduct a revolution without loyalty oaths, secret cell meetings, codes and handshakes? Or, on the other hand, mass candlelight demonstrations, organizing voting blocks, door-to-door registrations, and so on?

You indicated that the organizers will have training available? What is the training, how much will it cost and when will it be ready?

How will you conduct the leadership training?

What kind of local activities do you envision? I think that CSM is a great idea, but how do we sustain our energy over the next 8 years?

Sharif, what is your role in the Common Society Movement? How will that change in the future?

How do we deal with people who are afraid or reluctant to come to an orientation?

Do you think people will oppose CSM? How will we deal with those who might want to attack us?

What is your timeline?

Most of the people coming to the orientations are the same race, ethnicity and class as me. Shouldn't we be concerned about diversity?

The CSM orientation was great -- I really loved it! But, it all seems a little vague. Just what are you asking me to do?

There are lots of people and organizations out there trying to make the world a better place. Is CSM competing with them? Do you think they are doing something wrong? Should I give up my work with another organization and join CSM?
